duct-tape.jpgToothbrush—check. Phone charger—check. Duct tape—duct tape? If you’re taking a trip, that’s one of the items you should be sure to pack. So says Lifehack.org, which compiled a list of five travel essentials. Here’s the full skinny on the tape trick:

I don’t mean that you should take a roll, but instead take about 10 feet wrapped upon itself into a little rectangle about the size of a wallet. Use this for instant lint brushing, hacking curtains shut to better darken the room, hanging signs, taping down your laptop cord at a conference, mending damaged luggage, and about 3,149 other applications.

The author also recommends bringing baby wipes (for cleaning up those inevitable coffee spills), energy bars (for a healthy snack during those inevitable flight delays), and a power strip (for those ill-equipped hotel rooms). Be sure to check the comments area below the post to see what essentials other travelers recommend. And while you’re at it, why not post some of your own right here? You know where: the Comments page!

    the travel wallet & adapter

I keep two wallets. the 'travel wallet' contains foreign currency of the country i most often visit, credit card international emergency numbers and anything else I only use when i travel. eg international drivers licence. then when i'm going abroad, I just transfer the things that I am going to want to travel with (ID card, drivers licence, frequent flier membership and most internationally friendly creditcards) and leave the other stuff, like video shop cards buss pass and local currency in my 'home wallet'. it also means when you travel you know exactly what you need to cancel or replace if you lose your wallet.
Adapter: take one. while all hotels hotels in Asia (excluding Japan) will have one for you to borrow (and in some establishments I have seen staff nipping out to buy one for guests who need one) they are virtually impossible to come by in many parts of the world and if you do manage to catch the insanly short opening hours of the very limited electronics shops in, say europe, look forward to paying through the nose.
