How to Get Free Wi-Fi at Starbucks

starbucks-wi-fi.jpgFor years I’ve predicted that Starbucks would eventually abandon its ridiculously overpriced Wi-Fi and join Caribou Coffee, Panera Bread, and other chains in setting connectivity free. Well, I was right. (Hey, it doesn’t happen often, so I have to brag when it does!) As of yesterday, you can get free Internet access at any (participating) Starbucks location.

Okay, ”free” with a couple small caveats. First, you have to buy a pre-paid Starbucks card and register it online. Second, you have to use it (or recharge it) at least once a month. Third, you have to create an AT&T account (free) and agree to the occasional spam — er, promotional e-mail. Finally, you have to limit your Internet activity to two hours per day.

Personally, I think all those stipulations are fair. High-speed Internet access is a privilege, not a right, and I don’t mind spending a few bucks on a cup of coffee or brick of crumb cake to get it. I also don’t mind the two-hour limitation, as it keeps people from turning Starbucks into all-day offices.

Agree? Disagree? Hit the Comments and tell us if you’ll be visiting Starbucks more, less, or the same amount as a result of this new offering. [via jkOnTheRun]

I agree - that's pretty awesome and thank goodness - the prices for Wifi there were insane for most people - definitely too high - it was always worth the inconenience of just waiting to go home or even simply choosing another coffee shop because of the free wifi.

I can certainly buy the 2 hr time limit, but the other stipulations, although fair to some Starbucks regulars, are not the way to gain new customers.

Why does Starbucks think that they always have to make $$ on everything? If they simply provided a free access point they would be able to draw in people who may have never visited a Starbucks before because they don't drink coffee and didn't know that Starbucks was more than coffee.

I say that Starbucks is short-sighted in their approach....

    Silly and short-sighted

Pre-paid card??? Why in the world would I want a prepaid card? I just use my credit card like most people. Swapping expense for hassle isn't really an improvement.

And the two-hour time limit is silly too. So what if people stick around for 3-4 hours, or even all day? Who sits there all day and doesn't keep ordering stuff?

I usually spend one evening a week at a nearby coffee house and often have a long lunch at a Schlotzsky's near where my son does theater. Why? Because they have free wi-fi. And I always spend at least $7-$8.

Not only does this NOT make me want to go to Starbucks for free wi-fi, it makes me want to avoid them for continuing these profit-mongering, customer-hostile practices.

It is about time! Am pleased that this is being offered, finally. $5 / cup coffee and then paid internet was a bit OTT. Thanks for letting us know!

    No way

I am not a big fan of Starbucks to begin with and this offer only makes them worse. I would never jump through all their hoops to get the free wi-fi when so many independent coffee shops offer free wi-fi AND better coffee.

JavaMoose in New Brunswick has been offering open access, people choose to thank them for it by frequenting their establishment rather than the next-door Starbucks. Good idea!

    No Value Added!

The premise of the story is that Starbucks charges too much for WiFi when other establishments are offering FREE WiFi with no strings attached. Aside from price, what has changed?

I am still inclined to go to any of the many other coffee shops who require no pre-paid card, no spam sign-up, and have no time limit. Free WiFi means a "captive audience" who will buy things throughout the day; means repeat customers; means a happy, productive clientele. Starbucks COMPLETELY misses the mark on this one. I will continue to frequent my other customer-friendly, wired, non-merchandised yet bustling cafes...

    Free should be free...

Telling me I have to buy a gift card for a minimum of $5 in order
to use what is dubbed as "free" WiFi, even for a brief time, is
    not free.
