foldershare2.jpgProblem: You’ve got a desktop in your office, a notebook that travels with you, and a need to access the same files and folders on both machines. Solution: Microsoft’s newly updated Windows Live FolderShare, a free service that not only keeps folders in sync between two or more computers, but also lets you share files with others and access them remotely.

All you do is sign up for a free account, then install and run the FolderShare software (a small system-tray utility) on the machines you want to  sync. From there you follow a simple Web-based wizard to choose a machine, a folder, and a destination. The sync process happens in the background, requiring no extra effort on your part. Now, whenever a file gets changed, added, or removed in one location, it’s updated accordingly in the other location(s).

Microsoft just updated FolderShare with the following improvements:

  • A new website designed to makes managing your FolderShare libraries and computers even easier.
  • A better setup, a better system tray menu, and better performance on Windows Vista.
  • Improvements on the backend to keep FolderShare running more smoothly and reliably.

Okay, so nothing earth-shattering, but it’s nice to see this indispensable service getting some attention. If you haven’t tried FolderShare, I guarantee you’ll find it really, really handy. [via jkOnTheRun]

How does it compare to BeInSync?

I have been using BeInSync for several years synchronizing my files, email and contacts. It costs around $50 a year and is pretty good but has some hangups. Does anyone know how FolderShare compares? And will it sync email and contacts?
