sickday.jpgHaving just gotten my butt kicked by a virulent form of the flu that’s making its way around San Francisco, I’ve been thinking a lot about sickness and productivity recently. It’s a complicated issue. Certainly, there’s the battle being waged between your desire to get work done and your desire to sleep. You also don’t want to look like a slacker to your boss and colleagues but at the same time you don’t want to risk getting them sick by coughing all over them at work.

Both the Shifting Careers blog at The New York Times and LifeHacker discuss this exact dilemma, though people in the comments seem pretty divided about how to deal with sickness, from the viewpoints of  the afflicted, his boss, or his coworker. One thing they all seem to agree on, though, is that–if at all possible–cold sufferers should try to work from home.

Does your workplace have any good ways of dealing with illnesses? Let me know in the comments.

Dealing with the Flu at Work

One the things we do at my job is alow our employee to stay home and rest. There was one occation that I had an employee that was ill ( she had the flu). So we diecided to give her some time off and, we had her co-workers finish her projects. She was out for about a week and when she got back she was ready to go. This helped out in two ways 1. We took care of our employee and allowed her to heal herself. and 2. The producvity and execution never stopped, by having her co-workers help, her work was finished, and her counterparts saw another part of the business.

Please stay home if you are sick, especially if you are coughing, sneezing and blowing your nose. No one wants all those germs; I don't want to get sick! Workplaces have the ablility to accomodate working remotely, or having someone out for a couple of days. Why risk giving the bug to everyone and their family?? Please, stay home.

RE: Dealing with the Flu at Work

I agree, if an employee is sick surely we would prefer they stay at home and concentrate on getting well so they can get back to work quicker. If an employee remains at work while sick we risk the spread of infection to the rest of our staff and the employee will not be very productive anyway.

I guess we need to evaluate how much time the employee may require off in regards to the option of working from home and of course if the employee has a doctors certificate for the entire time off work they should not be expected to work from home during this time. This would need to be voluntary and an arrangement agreed between the employee and their Manager.
There can also be other issues relating to employees taking excessive sick leave which could relate to lack of motivation and job satisfaction, personal issues etc which need to be managed effectively by the employer.
