It’s time for the Big Think list of the best business books of 2008. Over the next week, post in comments on your favorite book or  books published in 2008, and I’ll gather them all up and pull together a poll that lets you vote on them. That will decide our list of the best business books of the year.

People have different definitions of what makes a book great. I look for books that teach me something, inspire or inform my work, crystallize an idea or are just a great read. Of the books I’ve reviewed this year, here’s the list of the ones that did all of these to at least some degree:

The Big Switch, Nicholas Carr

When Markets Collide, Mohamed El-Erian

Who’s Your City? , Richard Florida

Billions of Entrepreneurs, Tarun Khanna

The Back of the Napkin, Dan Roam

One Hen, Katie Smith Milway

Creating a World without Poverty, Muhammad Yunus
Post your candidates in comments, and I’ll work up the voting list.

Know of a good business read you'd like to share with your fellow BNET readers?

from my inbox (name redacted in case they didn't post here on purpose):

The Black Hole War: My Battle with Stephen Hawking to Make the World Safe for Quantum Mechanics by Leonard Susskind, July 2008.

Yes, written in lay terms, this book mostly subjects the black hole, its physics and quantum issues; it is an easy read explaining same. Of importantce is that the book explains and gives uderstanding to (the theory of)big numbers and their scale.

It gives the reader, presupposing some think-time, a framework for transfering pysics/science to business models w/the application of a linear logic along w/the non-linear.

No, not a must read, but if you want to look beyond the ordinary, same stuff different day, this is indeed a worthwhile read.
    Kind regards,

    Hi Michael,

I've recently read "Predictably Irrational" by Dan Arieli - maybe not so apparent business but certainly very insightful.

Consider this a second for the nomination of Senge's Necessary Revolution. Well written, informative and full of real life examples.

In the current world wide recessionary scenario the most appropriate books should be Maverick (Warner Books, 1993) and The Seven-Day Weekend (Penguin/Portfolio, 2004), by Ricardo Semler. For me these are eye-openers for all, employers and employees.

a reminder that for the Best Of list, the book should be published in 2008.

like this one, sent to me in email:

This book is already on the Amazon.com and Wall Street Journal best seller lists.

The 29% Solution (See www.29PercentVideo.com) is the first book designed to integrate networking into the way you do business on a weekly basis with fifty-two quick, straightforward networking strategies.

Your income is directly related to your ability to network your business for growth. This book gives you the tools to become a great networker and part of the 29% of the population that produces exceptional results.

Thanks for asking for my comments.

Another email submission, which I will post though the book was actually published in the fall of 2007:

My Best of 2008 book is Gary Hamel's The Future of Management. In it, he focuses on innovation as the way to reinvent organizations to sustain themselves into a very different future. His use of case studies makes it interesting and compelling.

Highly recommend Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School by John Medina. Clearly and elegantly written, this book will transform how you think about your brain, about how we learn, and about how we should structure our schoold and workplaces.

another reader submission via email. this one was also published before 2008.:

The Starfish and the Spider The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations by Ori Brafman and Rod A. Beckstrom

This truly is one of the greatest book that I have read. It has allowed me to think in a different way other than what I was accustomed to.
