  • Do Chauvinists Earn More? The Find: Men who hold traditional ideas of gender roles such as “a woman’s place is in the home” earn more than men with more egalitarian views.
  • The Source: Research from University of Florida organizational psychologists Timothy Judge and Beth Livingston recently published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.

The Takeaway: Between 1979 and 2005 dedicated researchers Judge and Livingston interviewed more than 12,000 people in a nationally representative sample about their ideas about the proper roles of women and men, as well as about their earnings, education and religious beliefs.

What conclusions came out of this massive pool of data? Sexism just might pay. Men in the study who said they had more traditional views of gender roles made an average of about $8,500 more annually than those who had less traditional attitudes controlling for job complexity, number of hours worked and education level.

Delightful.

The situation for women was reversed. More traditional views on gender correlated with decreased earnings — about $1,500 a year less. The researchers note that the findings cannot simply be explained by the type of work traditional women choose. Judge explains:

“These results cannot be explained by the fact that, in traditional couples, women are less likely to work outside the home. Though this plays some role in our findings, our results suggest that even if you control for time worked and labor force participation, traditional women are paid less than traditional men for comparable work.”

The researchers conclude by speculating that the gender pay gap may have as much to do with psychology as it does with economics, but also note that more research is needed to suss-out a full explanation of the phenomenon.

The Question: Why do you think more traditionally minded men earn more?

RE: Why Do Chauvinists Earn More?

I think we are looking at this situation backwards. Those who are financially challenged need the second income to get by day to day. Those who earn more money do not need the second income. Therefore, they do not need to change their philosophy in regards to whether women should work.

Chauvinists may be more aggressive in the job market place because they believe that they must bring home all the bacon. They may also be less inclined to yield to female competition. Traditional women are more likely to work in jobs traditionally held by women which tend to be lesser paying.

it just goes to show that the men at the top of the tree are chauvinistic old fruits who reward other chauvinists through income and position for having similar values to themselves.

RE: Why Do Chauvinists Earn More?

Are people jumping to conclusions that people who are high in masculine energy are chauvinists? Talk about downtrodden women! It is a reasonably well known fact (read articles by David Deida etc.) that masculine energy is focused on achievement whilst feminine energy is about flow and life and variability. People, not just men, who are high in masculine energy achieve more. It is simply nature at work.

RE: Why Do Chauvinists Earn More?

Why? Because they are worth it.

If "aggression" leads to a higher level of effort, a better product, and continued promotion, then that person will earn more. If chauvinism and aggression and earnings are statistically related, that doesn't necessarily mean chauvinist attitudes are rewarded. Was causation proven?

I know plenty of aggressive women who out-perform more-passive male co-workers, yet many of these women and men seem to live "normal" gender roles with their partners. Like men, the best of these high-performing women seem to be rewarded for their efforts, even to the point of reverse discrimination.

I too believe that people at the "top" reward people they see as having similar values, such as hard work. Is that gender discrimination or a reward for performance?

And, yes, I'm a chauvinist. As the primary income source for my family, I take my role seriously, and compete against male and female peers for promotion and money. And may the best person win.

RE: Why Do Chauvinists Earn More?

A man with traditional views of gender roles is automatically labeled as sexist and chauvinist? Does this article suggest that a household with dual incomes maintain non-traditional viewpoints? My husband and I both have traditional views of gender roles, yet we both have full-time professional jobs. As stated in the first response to this article, maybe we need to look at this situation in reverse. Men (or women) who make enough money so that two incomes aren't required may have traditional viewpoints since the spouse isn't required to work. Households requiring two incomes may have to dismiss traditional roles simply to make ends meet.

RE: Why Do Chauvinists Earn More?

Does the study take into account COMBINED household income? I bet the egalitarian men are
    a) enjoying more money when combined with their professional other half
    b) less stressed
    c) work less
    d) ergo, smarter
    e) all of the above

RE: Why Do Chauvinists Earn More?

Maybe my understanding of a Chauvinist is different from what others are posting. I thought a man was a chauvinist not because he's competitive or has "high energy", but because he believes because of their gender, women should assume certain roles and behaviors and that they as men have "god given" rights to assume certain superior roles and behaviors that define their value.

My first question when reading this article was what is the age range of these men? Although I think we have come along way, that progress seems to be with younger generations rather than swaying the over 55 crowd. It's hard to give up the pole position when the world revolves around you. Today's couples are more a partnership now, rather than I'm the breadwinner and you're the caretaker. Although many couples young and old find it rewarding to assume those roles based on their nature. The difference today, is that it is a choice and not an assumption.

To the question why do chauvinists earn more, my guess is that they are remnants of our past and the "good old boys" reward themselves for maintaining their society's integrity.

But time is against them. At some point age and distain will overcome them and their discrimination.

Egalitarians are less driven by materialism and position than chauvinists. Consequently, they are content with less salary or more salary. For more info, see studies by Clare Graves and Don Beck.

RE: Why Do Chauvinists Earn More?

I would say that Chauvinists have a tendency to consider themselves at-top in everything, be at work place, at home and everywhere they are into and this is very much the natural instinct. The aggression plays vital role in everything they do and they are very much craze about acheivements. They do have a natural feeling that Women are caretakers only and can't ever stand equal or competative to them in any aspect of life.

These results could reflect a bias toward males because of changing facts about pay that have occurred during the lengthy data collection period.

RE: Why Do Chauvinists Earn More?

I need more information on the chauvinists, please.

According to the Times of India it was also noted that another study said that location plays a part of income gaps.

Also that women in their 20s tend to earn more, could that be because they are starting out at that pay compared to women who started out at an earlier time and point or is there an educational issue at work.

Or it could be the economics of beauty at work. Who knows really.
