I was at the Search Marketing Expo today, and while listening to a presentation on building your own tracking mechanisms for search, I glanced around to see something that was both ominous and revealing. Dozens or others in the room were browsing the Internet. That may not seem exciting to you, but what I noticed was that a very sizable portion were using their mobile devices to do so. I’ve never seen so many people in a single room browsing the Internet - let alone on phones. And the statistics point to the fact that there is much room for growth.
The average iPhone user eats up around 110MB of traffic every month. That means, assuming that every page is 130K in size, each iPhone user is visiting the equivalent of nearly 900 pages every month on their phone; it’s a huge untapped market, but marketers are beginning to get smart to it. Marketing dollars spent on mobile marketing will more than triple in the next five years to reach 61 billion by 2012.
