The Takeaway: Pouring resumes into the endless black pit of HR department emails and shaking hands at networking events until your palm is sore can be among the most soul crushing of activities – and that’s even before you consider the impact on your self-esteem and daily rhythms that came with losing your previous job. But realizing the deep unpleasantness of the situation facing millions of Americans right now is not the same thing as giving in to despair, and recruitment expert Olson suggests there are at least six things job seekers can do to stay positive during a grueling job hunt. Her advice:

  1. Take responsibility for your happiness: When you let a potential employer, or anyone else for that matter, control your feelings, you’ll never end up very happy. Happiness, bitterness, or frustration are all choices. How you decide to react to any situation in a job search is up to you.
  2. Reward yourself for the small successes along the way: Celebrate when you get a phone interview or second-round interview. OK, it’s not a job offer, but it’s a step in the right direction. Even if you aren’t selected for the job, it means your resume is communicating the right things to a potential employer.
  3. Find a job search partner and surround yourself with positive people: Networking should play a huge part in your job search, however, if you find yourself surrounded by “Debbie Downers”, find another group!
  4. Set goals. Get up and get out: Don’t allow yourself to sleep in and lounge around. Take your job search seriously and search every single day. Set daily goals and track your progress.
  5. Find time to do things you enjoy: Keeping your life balanced will help you stay positive and keep things in perspective. Explore a new hobby. Catch up on your reading list. Eat right and exercise!
  6. Consider exploring a cause you are passionate about through part-time volunteer work.: Not only can volunteering lead to possible job leads and new connections, but it’s a good way to add structure to your days and feel like you are contributing to a positive cause.

Olson also points out that more positive candidates are more likely to be hired.

The Question: Do any job search veterans have more advice on how to keep a healthy frame of mind while looking for work?

Exercise is great for changing your mood. It can be something as simple as a walk around the block or more motivated like running or biking a few miles. The movement of your body provides a positive feeling that you can take back to your job search.
Often the fresh air and different surroundings will stimulate you to look at the situation or how you could offer a future employer a solution in a way others may not have thought of.

These suggestions really do help - I have used them myself. I also find it useful to try a couple of other things too :
    1. Try and "think out of the box" in terms of what you apply for - you will probably find you have more skills than you give yourself credit for - think competencies rather than a list of what you have done - sell to your strengths.
    2. Think about getting a professional to review and advise on your CV - is it in the traditional list of what you have done - or is it a document which markets you as a person and makes you stand out from the crowd of applications ?
I am also using the time to study further and I am really enjoying that - and learning so much. What I do find is that I may not be "going to the office" every day - but I am really busy and usually still at my computer in the evenings, reading or browsing or whatever.

Volunteer at a professional organization in your area that relates to the field you are in. This gets you noticed and the networking possibilities are great. This also allows you to fill in time in your resume so that you don't have a gap.

Look into networking groups and other job hunt networks. In Columbus, Ohio there are several groups that help job hunters - Shepherd's Network, 40 Plus and the local libraries.

In the US the Federal Government provides grants up to $3,000 for job training. These are administered by the counties in most states. I was able to get a $3,400 Informatica training course paid for with the grant and a 10% discount from Informatica.

I also recommend exercise on a daily basis.

These are great ideas! Don't forget about your social network either! If you use FaceBook and LinkedIn and Plaxo, you can leverage those contacts to help in your search.

I read a great article titled "Unemployed? Use your Social Network" at http://managerqanda.blogspot.com/2008/12/unemployed-use-your-social-network.html

That said, I do like the points listed above!

To stay in a good mood think about how music can influence your mood. Find yourself a theme song. Prime the pump for your confident and optimistic interview/networking attitude.
